Winter Wines to Warm You Up
Winter in Melbourne means coats, fog, and the kind of evenings that call for something hearty in the glass. Here are six bottles we’ve been reaching for at Hawthorn East this season.
The Everyday Red
2023 Yangarra Estate GSM, McLaren Vale — Grenache-Shiraz-Mourvèdre blends were made for winter. This one is juicy without being heavy, with enough spice to stand up to a slow-cooked ragu. Around $22.
The Splurge
2021 Yeringberg Cabernet Blend, Yarra Valley — If you’re cooking something special, this is the bottle to open. Deep, structured, and beautifully balanced. Cellar-worthy but drinking well now. Worth every cent of the $65.
The Left-Field Pick
NV Seppeltsfield Para Tawny, Barossa — Don’t sleep on fortified wines in winter. A small glass of aged tawny after dinner, maybe with some dark chocolate, is one of life’s genuine pleasures. The Seppeltsfield is the benchmark.
